Remnants
‘Remnants’ was the debut solo exhibition by contemporary visual artist Domino Whisker at Atelier Now Gallery, Dublin.
The collection explored themes of great loss, memory, and the healing process, featuring a physically and emotionally tangled body of work created by piecing together fragments of the past.
The deeply personal exhibition explored the artist's ability to transform grief into art. Created in the wake of the loss of her father, the works became an act of self-preservation, preserving memories, emotions and the quiet traces left behind.
‘Remnants’ is a limited edition pocket-size (110x155mm) 32 page tactile and uncoated soft white offset lithographic print book. A minimal screen-printed cover on organic brown kraft board opens to uncoated interior pages that frame Domino’s embroidered linen canvases with honesty and warmth. Hand-bound with a red stitched thread, echoing the embroidery that runs throughout the artist's work and reinforcing the intimate relationship between object and artwork. It complements Domino’s ‘Remnants’ exhibition in Dublin, winter 2021.
The book was designed and produced by Leonie in collaboration with the artist, Domino, and photographer Liadh Connolly. Conceived as an artefact rather than simply a publication, it was intended to feel like a small extension of the artist's practice. The book communicates the values of craftsmanship through its own making, with exposed thread binding, hand-finished details and carefully chosen materials creating a direct sensory connection between the reader and the techniques explored within.
The publication has since been preserved in the National Irish Visual Arts Library.
